Qualification concept for sustainable coolant lubrication strategies

Häuser + Renner is currently participating in the SME research project "Qualification Concept for Sustainable Cooling Lubrication Strategies" of the European Social Fund under the direction of the Institute of Resource and Energy Efficient Production Machines (REP) at the Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nürnberg. Project duration: 01.04.2019 - 31.03.2022
Against the background of the increasing use of difficult-to-machine (lightweight) materials such as titanium alloys, stainless steels and nickel-based alloys on the one hand and the growing importance of resource and cost efficiency in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) on the other hand, a qualification concept for sustainable cooling lubricant strategies in machining was developed at the REP.
The participating companies receive training on selected aspects of cooling lubricants (coolant lubricants) and metal-cutting machining within the framework of theme days. The REP is supported by specialists from well-known companies such as manufacturers of exhaust systems, lubricant manufacturers, tool manufacturers, etc.
The following goals are to be achieved by the project:
  • Substitution of conventional wet machining by more sustainable coolant strategies according to ISO 14040 with the same productivity and tool life development of efficiency potentials through optimized process windows application of commercial sensor technology and automation for coolant management
  • Intensification of the use of bio-based lubricants in machining production processes with geometrically defined cutting edge
  • Elimination of process-specific disadvantages of alternative coolant strategies, e.g. optimization of chip transport in minimum quantity lubrication (=MQL) by simple measures
  • Development of a standardized procedure for process change towards alternative coolant strategies
  • Establishment of a cross-company and regional network and knowledge management for coolant strategies
